How to use a metal detector: first steps
- Charge or fit batteries and switch on away from metal. Phones, cars and steel-capped boots all cause false signals.
- Start in the default or 'All Metal' mode until you learn what different targets sound like.
- Ground balance if your detector has it. On mineralised ground this removes most false signals; see our ground balancing guide.
- Swing low and slow. Keep the coil level and about 2 to 3 cm above the ground, overlapping each sweep by half a coil width.
- Pinpoint before you dig. Use pinpoint mode or a handheld pinpointer to find the exact spot, and check the target ID first; our guide to reading target ID helps.
- Fill every hole and get the landowner's permission before you search.
Practise with a few known objects, such as a coin, a nail, foil and a ring, buried at different depths in your own garden. An hour of this teaches you more than a week of random digging.
